In December 2024, after months of anticipation, Big Bone Lick State Historic Site received recognition by the National Park Service (NPS) as a “National Historic Landmark”. The designation is a well-deserved honor for the state park, and Friends of Big Bone Board member Jeannine Kreinbrink, a local archaeologist, played a significant role in securing the designation for the park. Many kudos to Jeannine for her hard work and persistence! The recognition by the NPS adds to the previous designations for the park, including “National Register of Historic Places” (1972, expanded in 1997 and 2002), “Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail” (2002), and “National Natural Landmark” (2009).
