Big Bone Methodist Church (circa 1888)
Restoration Project

Work has begun on stabilizing the exterior of the Big Bone Lick Methodist Church (circa 1888) and the Friends of Big Bone are playing an important part in the rehabilitation.

In September the State Parks approved a contract to replace the roof and gutters on the church which have been the major culprit in some of the deterioration. Prior to letting the roffing contract trees that were infringing on the church have also been trimmed back or removed. After the gutters have been replaced there will need to be some fill dirt placed on both sides where the water has eroded the foundation.

Another water problem is the run-off from Rt 338 which flows directly into the front of the church. On September 6th and 7th Don Marksberry brought a crew up from Carter County to break up the concrete pad in front of the church. Thanks to the help and cooperation of local builders Rick Duncan and Daryl Black, the FOBB were able to help the state by removing the concrete.

The removal of the concrete will allow inspectors to get a good look at the front support beam to see the extent of damage from the water. After the beam is repaired or replaced, a curvert will be installed in front of the church to divert the run-off from the road.

When this is done the FOBB have committed to painting this historic church to further protect it from water damage. We still need help in the paiting project and with filling in the eroded foundation so if you have any expertise or connections to help us out please contact Patrick Lense.
