Salt of the Earth in Rabbit Hash
In 2003, Lynne Reif read the book, Follow the River, by James
Alexander Thom. She was so inspired by the story of Mary Ingles, that the next
time she picked up her guitar, this singer-songwriter started singing about Mary,
and shortly after, “Mary’s Hope” was written.
On a whim she sent the song, recorded by her band, “Salt of the Earth”, to James
Thom in the spring of 2005. Thom responded with kindness, and an announcement of a
family reunion for the Ingles descendants in July, 2005, to celebrate the 250th
anniversary of Mary’s ordeal. Two weeks later, on a sunny day, Lynne became a part
of this reunion, at Big Bone Lick State Park, and had the honor of playing “Mary’s
Hope” for the Ingles descendants who were there.
The weekend was filled with history, music, and an unparalleled celebration of
family. On October 15th, Lynne returned to Kentucky to perform with her band, Salt of
the Earth, in the barn in Rabbit Hash. Between the bands "roots" style of music and the
Rabbit Hash setting, the night became a special evening of music that may never be duplicated.
"We enjoyed 'Salt of the Earth' immensely and I've heard nothing but complimentary comments
from the 'locals'. I know you guys don't travel much but if for any reason you find yourself
in our neck of the woods again, be sure and let Rabbit Hash know!", stated local Bobbi Kayser
the following day.
"We had an amazing time and really appreciated the way all of you responded to us.
We'd love to come back and play some more in your neck of the woods, so I'm hoping
that can happen sooner than later!", stated Lynne after the event.
