Friends of Big Bone 2019 Meeting Dates, Programs, and Activities
All programs begin at 7:00 at the Scheben Branch Library
February 28- Daniel Boone (Karl Lietzenmayer)
The presentation will open with a brief overview of Daniel Boone’s early life. Discussion, however, will center on Daniel's exploits in Kentucky, including his involvement in the Transylvania scheme and his part in the Wilderness Road as well as John Filson's role in Daniel's fame. The question of where Boone's remains reside will conclude the talk.
April 25- Bio Blitz at Big Bone (Amelia Hulth)
Discover what a bio blitz is at Big Bone Lick State Historic Site. Amelia Hulth, park manager, will describe what this activity does and how its findings improve the understanding of the park’s natural surroundings. Hulth will also update the audience regarding the findings about the flora and fauna in the park from the 2018 Blitz at Big Bone and how this information enables park personnel to better manage the park. Since volunteers will be needed for the May 18, 2019 (7:00 AM- 1:00 PM) Bio Blitz, come join us and learn how you can become involved.

August 22- The Mandan Indians and the Lewis and Clark Core of Discovery (Pat Fox)
Before Lewis and Clark made their infamous journey, the Mandan Indians were a thriving community along the upper Missouri River in North Dakota. Learn about these Native Americans who maintained secure villages and were able to provide the Core with shelter and food during the harsh winter of 1804-1805. Discover the Core’s effects and those of other white visitors/traders on the Mandans and their demise.
October 24 America’s First Human Explorers (Jeannine Kreinbrink)
When did humans first explore the Americas? Join Jeannine Kreinbrink, local archaeologist, as she takes the audience on a journey that examines America’s first human explorers. Using archaeological, linguistic, and DNA evidence, she will describe new information, exploration routes, and fascinating details about the Paleo Indians including those who found their way to Big Bone Lick.

- May 4th and 5th- Geo Fair- Sharonville Community Center 11355 Chester Rd.- Saturday- 10:00-6:00 and Sunday- 10:00-5:00
- May 11th - 7th Annual Community Activities Fair at Boone County’s Farmer’s Market (rain or shine) 9:00-1:00
- May 18th -Bio-Blitz at BBLSHS. FOBB members will assist in the identification and picture taking of flora and fauna discovered that day within park boundaries
- September 28th- Great Outdoor Weekend- family friendly day-trip to the park complete with walk and talks given by paleontologists/archaeologists, sample of a pioneer campsite, bison-viewing, activities for children, and atlatl demonstrations, etc.
- October 18th - 20th- Salt Fest at BBLSHS
